ABOUT

Every year, over 100 children from the Greater Louisville area perform at Whitney Hall in The Brown-Forman Nutcracker, bringing joy to audiences of all ages. Children dance in the party scene and throughout Act I and II as mice, toy soldiers, angels, and jockeys. The two children’s casts dance alongside Louisville Ballet Company and Studio Company Artists over the many performances of the cherished local tradition. If you want to be a part of the magic, explore more about the audition process below.

Applications are due by August 14, 2026.

  • He/she must have had at least one year of dance training.
  • He/she must meet the specified height requirements.

Attire and Appearance

Girls – Leotard (no nude camisoles, please!), tights or socks, and ballet or jazz shoes. Hair must be pulled back from the face and off the nape of the neck and secured in a neat manner.

Boys – T-shirt, jazz pants, biker shorts or tights, ballet or jazz shoes.

Please be mindful of our limited space and potential distractions and send your child with only what is necessary for the audition. Thank you!

Parent Expectations

Because our space is very limited, no parent or guardian may wait inside the building on audition day. We will ask you to provide a phone number where you can be reached that day in the event of an emergency.

Parents should return to our studio building 30 minutes before your child’s audition time ends. We will bring your child to our front entrance and call your name once your child has arrived. Children must be signed out by a parent/guardian. No child may leave our studios without their parent/guardian.

Commitment

We consider our Children’s Cast to be a vital and important part of The Brown-Forman Nutcracker each year. Because we take their roles very seriously, we ask that you and your child take your potential participation just as seriously. All Children’s Cast members are expected to commit to attending all scheduled rehearsals and performances. Beyond that, we expect our important Children’s Cast members to fully commit to giving their best effort when they share studios and the stage with our professional company.

Please carefully review the performance dates and rehearsal schedule to determine if you and your child, if cast, are ready to join us for this exciting production.

Please note that our rehearsal schedules are finalized by Louisville Ballet Artistic Staff. We will provide a complete rehearsal schedule to children who are cast and will update our website louisvilleballet.org for the most up-to-date information regarding any schedule changes including rehearsals, costume fittings, etc.

We will schedule a parent information session to give more details about our expectations, to meet other parents and to address any questions you may have regarding your child’s participation. We will provide the time and date for this meeting following your child’s audition.

Our Children’s Cast members may be required to rehearse on any or all of the following days. Please note that times listed below are for example only; this schedule is ONLY to give you a general idea of the time commitment involved in your participation.
